“Mariella Mystery, that’s me. Totally amazing girl detective aged 9 and a bit. No mystery too mysterious, no problem too perplexing!”
When I was a child I loved mystery stories and longed for something totally mysterious to happen to me. (I didn’t think it was very fair that the Famous Five and Secret Seven had wild adventures solving mysteries EVERY single school holiday. My school holidays were fun but sadly lacking in smugglers and secret passage ways.
Although nothing that mysterious ever did happen to me (even though I’d set up and under-bed detective HQ so I was prepared for anything), I did get to imagine all sorts of mystery scenarios and how I would deal with them. It was this day-dreaming that helped me to develop the idea for Mariella Mystery – the first series I’ve both written and illustrated.
I also took lots of inspiration from my own younger brother, Andrew, for Mariella’s annoying younger brother – Arthur Mystery. I love writing about Arthur as it brings back lots of funny memories about stuff my brother did to me when he was little. (It’s funny now, but at the time it was VERY annoying.)
There are now eight titles starring Mariella and her two best friends, Poppy and Violet, AKA The Mystery Girls. Perfect reads for Young Super Sleuths*!
